Pan de Cruz from Ciudad Real is bread made from a compact, dense piece of bread wheat, with firm, white crumbs, shaped like a round loaf with a smooth crust and two deep, cross-like cuts (hence the name, which translates as ‘Cross Bread’). This artisan bread is made by rolling the dough into a cone-shaped ball and then adding two cross-shaped cuts.
Production area
‘Pan de Cruz’ is produced throughout the province of Ciudad Real.
Most of the production takes place at family-run bakeries run by successive generations. Most bread ovens in the province of Ciudad Real date back centuries.
